Can you believe I went to the dragstrip for the first time ever last night? Only about 20 years late. I have gone just to watch before, but I've never ran anything. I took the thruxton since that's the tamest bike, I was meeting up with some other guys on bikes and they put all the bikes together in one staging lane, so I didn't want to take the mustang. Best run was a 13.088 @ 101.58. I still can't really tell where to shift the thing at. First two runs were 13.2s I was shifting close to redline at 7500. That best run I shifted more around 6500 so I guess that helped. The last run I tried something different at the launch, held the revs around 4k and dumped the clutch all at once. That no work. I thought the front would come up because the pavement was so sticky with rubber (my boots were sticking to it) but the tire came loose instead. I had to back off a touch when that happened and I ended up with a 13.48. I'll tell you a secret if you promise not to tell anyone else.
I think my homemade pipe inserts are really killing my top end, although my times are basically a touch better than what most folks (except me) expected. General consensus on the triumph board was that I should run mid 13s. with one or two folks saying maybe 12.9s but probably 13.1s I really thought I'd be in the mid 12s. I'll probably take the mustang next time, I'm super curious to see what that will do being that I have so much of my own sweat and hillbilly how-to in the motor, etc...
How hard is it to remove those pipe inserts? Would you need to rejet or mess with your needle height? Do those carbs even have jet needles?
Once you get the hang of this, I can see you taking the ZRX to the strip...
Oh, and try to get somebody to shoot some photos or a little video clip of your launch if you can!
