I've been on the lookout for Johnny Moped's Cycledelic LP for years. Mostly because the band and album names are both so awesome, but I also know that Billy Childish holds them in high regard and Billy is a man of impeccable sensibility. I could easily get the cd, but I usually hold out for vinyl and so have never heard it. I just got The Bootleg Tapes Vol. I & II in the mail. It's some really fun shit. Good musicians (for 77 brit punk) that don't take themselves too seriously. Lots of fun little intros ands skits and stuff. my favorite is "how to start a moped" which involves a moped minus the exhaust baffles being revved hard and raced around the block. Best songs are intentionally sloppy covers of r&r standards like chuck Berry's "Little Queenie" good stuff.
There's one vid of a J. Moped performance on youtube, but it's so-so. Anyhow, I realized that it's been nearly THREE WHOLE MONTHS since I went on about how great The Oblivians were, so why don't I just do that instead. And just in time, somebody has posted up a new vid. one of their more obscure tunes, the title track from an early 7" called "Go Pill Popper!"
From the Oblivians vids I got caught up in some linked supercharger videos, which otherwise are hard to find because you type in Supercharger and you get all sorts of Dodge Vipers and new shelby mustangs and top fuel dragsters. But the supercharger band videos weren't too great (they did promote themselves as America's Worst Rock and Roll Band after all) but they in turn linked to some Rip Offs videos. And then there was this one video that someone put together combining clips from the movie "Zodiac" and a great Rip Offs Tune "Zodiac" so you're going to watch that. which is a shame because the Rip Offs had the single best ever stage costumes:standard jewelry heist getaway black:
anyhow, here's the vid minus the band:
some of the Rip Offs are now in a band called The Zodiac Killers. catch them if you can, pun intentional.
