Since I am a music geek, I think I will use this first actual post to jot down some thoughts about what I have been listening to lately, etc. I admit that I don't think a whole lot of most of the music that is trendy, hot, and such. I guess I am too stuck in the "rockist" paradigm to really get into people like Lady Gaga and others. I admire Gaga's media savvy and her ability to control her image, but musically, her stuff just really doesn't resonate with me. Give me Joni Mitchell any day. Of course, most of the newer music I like (Fleet Foxes, My Morning Jacket, Midlake) take their cues from 70s styles and aesthetics. Part of me feels guilty for not being more open-minded about the music I incorporate into my life, but the rest is defiant. Ah well. That being said, I was driving home from teaching today listening to Yes' Keys to Ascension I. Prog gets kicked around all the time, but I have been a proud member of that cult since I was but a wee tiny tot. To me, there is something astounding about rock composers who can pull off 20 minute songs with passion and precision... so there!
