Last night I had the pleasure of seeing a play called Sleeping Around. It's a small production put on by Rude Guerrilla Theater Company in Santa Ana, CA.
There are twelve scenes, and each one features a couple engaged in dialogue that's a power struggle of sorts. Sometimes they are a married couple, sometimes adulterers, sometimes nearly-total strangers. Most scenes end with fucking or sucking or close to it. Then the next scene features one person from the previous scene involved with a new person who in some way turns the tables in the power dynamic. The following scene has that new person hooked up with a newer character. And again, there's a flip-flop of some kind. Ultimately, the last character is paired with the woman who had previously only been in scene one. This completes a full circle, a daisy chain if you will.
Sleeping Around examines spoken and unspoken power issues in sexual relationships, dominance and submission, and how we can be at one polarity in one situation and at the opposite end in another.
Longing, loneliness, desperation, and compromises of convenience are all painfully and comically scrutinized as stark realities of the human condition and the erotic quest.
See it if it comes to your town. There's some nudity, and most of the actors/actresses are at least moderately attractive.
My cousin turned me on to this play -- as well as Suicide Girls. She deserves something for that. Maybe I'll get her a Suicide Girls membership!
