Ventured out last night to see Thea Gilmore at the Half-Moon in Putney. It's a nice little gig pub with all the character of a good local boozer and a suitably sweaty backroom for the tunes. Naturally, as always happens, an EIGHT FOOT MEATBALL parked himself in front of me. I swear they just inflate these guys in the backroom of every gig and plonk them in front of you. You never see fuckers this tall out on the streets.
Mary Lee Kortes (of Mary Lee's Corvette) was supporting, and gave a short but really engaging performance with some crystal country/blues vocals. She was really sweet and got on with the crowd well.
I first heard about Thea Gilmore on Neil Gaiman's journal. I love that guy. Anyway, Thea played an pure acoustic set and she's really one of those artists that benefits from less production. It suits her folk/blues (with a hint of Dylan) flavour. It was the best gig I've been to in a long time. She brought the guitarists into the crowd and got us all to sing a blues number with her, and she dedicated a cover of CCR's Bad Moon Rising to President Bush.
Great stuff. Also, I find something strangely alluring about a woman bopping in a full suit with bowler hat. Go weird fetishism!
Only downer? I was on my lonesome. I always am really. I don't get on with people too well. I'm never really sure whether being such a loner should bother me or not, but I guess it does wear you down after a while. I have a lot of trouble having fun, particularly when I'm in a crowd, as I'm always doing this balancing act between relaxing and feeling sorry for myself. Every other minute I'll be looking around and feeling horribly lonely and alien, and then trying to surpress that and just enjoy myself. It's *so* hard to just relax and go with the flow and just stop thinking. Grargh.

Haven't seen you around here/LJ/PCGF for a bit and got worried about you. I hope everything is well with you.
