Thats been the problem with Star Trek for such a long time, criminal adherance to what has gone before. Its a set of rules imposed to by fans that like to bitch about the slightest deviation like a Nazi continuity person. They probably won't like the new film, but fuck 'em this isn't for you. This movie is for us folks that want Star Trek to echo the orginal series. That want it to boldly go where no script writer has gone before. Not be constrained by Trek lore, or fear fanboys ire.
Enough of that though, here's some actual thoughts on the new movie -
- The casing is spot on, and from that come performances that don't mimic the original performers. Chris Pine is James Tiberius Kirk, but he's not Shatners Kirk, the same goes for the other actors. They're playing the role, not the actor that came before.
- The new Enterprise is beautiful. The interiors have been scaled up as well, engineering is now a huge set, the bridge is fantastic.
- Excellent effects work, there's not a single shoddy shot.
- Simon Pegg, you lucky lucky bastard.
- Never thought I'd hear Sabotage in a Trek movie.
I have a few niggles though:
- It suffers from the same problems the first Spiderman/X men/ Iron Man movies have. It's all setup. You just know the next movie is going to blow it out of the water as the sequels to the above films did (well, hopefully). And I have to wait to see what that will be, will it be the Klingons? The Borg? Something else? All I know is that I want to see it. NOW!
- The plot is a deus ex machina. Its a device to get this crew into action and nothing more.
- They haven't made the next one yet.
- Seriously JJ can you please get on that as soon as possible.
In closing Star Trek is bloody ace, I'm off to buy the orginals on blu - ray and then dusting off my copy of the Star Fleet Technical Manual.
Jesus just when I thought I was out they pulled me back in.
In case you need more impetus to see it here's the trailer -
