right now it's 3am. i was asleep for 3 hours but i'm awake again and i am sitting on the couch writing on paper next to a lit candle and a flashlight. so lets back it up a little, to thursday morning, 6:45 am. That's when my alarm goes off for work. So, i am leaving the house and rushing to make the 7 42 train a few towns awaay. i have no gas in my car, the gas light has been on for 2 days now. why didn't i get gas? just lazy i guess. i have them oney for gas. i just don't pass a gas station on my way to the train adn wasn't going out of my way to get to one. ip ark my car, take my 50 cents for a newpaper out of my tray in my car, get out, lock the door and get on the train.
FFWD>> 9am get to work
11am phone call from mom:"is there anyting scary i wouldn't want people to see under your bed?"
<>11am "is there anything scary i wouldn't want people to see under your bed?" i ask her what she means and she says the insurance people are there and they are ripping up the carpet in the whole basement and removing my bed to do so. again i ask her what she means by scary. she says "anything like knives or porn under the bed?" no my knives are hanging on the wall and i don't have porn i actually threw out the last few magazines i had the other day and they were in the closet not under the bed. so she hangs up. back to work
type type type. i spent the moring typing a boring antenuptial agreement and the afternoon typing a 19 page will. i don't understand what is wrong with people. papers for premediatated divorces when they aren't married yet and papers for premeditated death when they aren't old or sick.
FFWD>>4:11pm i'm on page 15 of this 19 page will and all of a sudden gets dark and silent. all the power in the office is off. we figure it's just us, wrong. the whole floor is out, the whole building is out. i look out the window and everyone else is looking out their window trying to figure out if it's just their power. ok, so maybe it's just lower manhattan that's lost power. the lady i work with called he neighbor to see if they had power. i mean people panic a little. i work just 2 blocks from where the world trade center was. so we find out staten island is out too as well as brooklyn.
no reason to stay at work with out computers working. time to go home. we make out way downstairs in the pitch black dark 8 floors, the elevators are not working and people got stuck on them when the power went out. along with 19 other floors of people trying to get out of the building. one lady had a radio by the time we get outside we have heard power is out as far as ottawa, toronto, detriot, columbus, erie, new jersey and all of new york. the reason is unknown, butthere are no signs of terrorist activity. no power, no cellphones working, no air conditioning and it the hottest day so far of the summer, no traffic lights, nothing. no subways, no trains. i would have been stuck in manhattan in all this heat. luckily my boss drives to work and offered me a ride home. we go to the garage and get the car around 5pm. start making out way toward the brooklyn bridge, 4 blocks away. the streets are swamped with people walking back uptown and over to the bridge. there is no incoming traffic to the city. it takes us 45 minutesto get a 1/4 block from the office. by 6 :30 we are near the foot of the bridge. there are 2 lanes of cars and about 6 lanes of people walking. i wished i had a bike. the whole way home we would pass people hitching to get as far as anyone would take them towards their houses.
i get to my car around 7 25 since no trains are runing the parking lot still seems full. around this time when i usually get home from work it's mostly empty. i unlock my car and i get in. something seems strange, things moved and out of place. my tray with all my change is open and all that's in there are a few penies , no quarters and none of of those gold one dollar things the ticket machines give you as change. just yesterday i emptied all the change in my purse into the tray. there was about $20 in there when i left this morning and now there was about 65 cents. some fucking junkie broke in my car without breaking a window or lock. you say, but maybe i lef tthe car unlocked. no, and even if i had, my car automatically locks itself after like 5 minutes. also i had to unlock the door to get in. my cds are still there my ex pass is still there. all they took was my change, but still. that pisses me off.
time to drive home. i start the car and there, without fail is the ever precalent gas light. i planned on getting gas on my way home but there is no gas to be gotten with out the electricty to run the pumps. i drive by the gas station anyway, where some dumb blonde girl in a bright pink shirt with a plastic whistle thinks she is pretending to direct traffic. at the gas station there are about 20 cars parked there waiting for the power to go back on so they can get gas. i take my chances with running off gas fumes and actually make it home, barely. i don't think i'll make it to the gas station from my house when i go to get gas it's only 4 blocks but it's all uphill.
i get home and it's still light out but the sun is dropping fast. i am sweating from the heat and there is no relief to be found.
my only connection to anything is that i can get the news on my cell phone, but i can't actually make any calls. before i started writing the battery was dead and i read that we didn't have power yet near here and manhattan didn't have power and there would be no trains in the morning. which meant no work for me if i can't get there. it's probalby about 4:45 now and ny as declared a state of emergency.
when the sun is gone it's gone. you can't see your hand in front of your face.
