"holy fucking shit" where the first words out of my mouth when the theater lights went up. this movie knows how to pull atmosphere, tension, and itch at the raw nerve that is the dissatisfaction of a relationship. the movie picks apart the troubled lives of a married couple whos perfect life unravels the more the strings are tugged until only bitterness, resentment and lies are left. and there are a lot of lies here. every emotion and action taken by these two people is to hurt one another, not because they hate or loath each other (at first) but to simply feel anything about one another at all, until it simply becomes a race to destroy each others lives.
the directing is unmistakably david fincher, so nothing is wrong there, and the cast plays all of there parts perfectly, with the notable exception to neil patrick harris, whose preformace fell flat, and for the first time that i have seen, left me unconvinced his character was straight. i wasnt sure if he was trying to play it creepy, super reserved and sophisticated, or what, but the result was a character who simply bland, two dimensional, and unbelievable. I am a big NPH fan, and as far as i am concerned its a slight hiccup, as it is with an otherwise well acted film.
the movie is abound with twists and turns, with the first half of the movie you are asking yourself "what the hell happened?" and the second half saying "oh dear god...what now?" all in all, i forgot about my popcorn, and would give this movie a solid A.
