I spent a good while this evening arguing with my mom about going to volunteer in the south. Oregon has a volunteer chapter for rapid training to be deployed to the south in a couple weeks for 21 days. I was thinking I could take this term off and go help...but my mom pretty much told me they wouldn't assist me much in the way of taking care of my dog/apartment if I were to go. More over, they got a letter today saying I'm finally on the dean's list... so now they have bragging rights I suppose. She was pretty clear saying that I'm not allowed to take this term off.
"Maybe you can do something around here...less extreme" were her words. And I followed up with reminding her this sort of thing is what I'm going to school for and she just blew it off.
Stay safe in the suburbs is what she wanted to say. Its just frustrating. I donated money and still feel like I haven't done anything. I plan on volunteering locally but again, I still feel it isn't enough. There are still people stranded in houses around there. It is completely unacceptable.
I just want to go down there and help

It's very commendable that you want to help out down in NO. It would be a fantastic experience and probably very rewarding. Your mom is right though. YOu already have plans and responsibilites to attend school, take care of your life there and so on.
