It is believed that all the universe was, at one point held in a singularity. This singularity, by definition, had no edge, no dimension, and no surrounding space.
At some point, for some reason, or perhaps not, the universe was formed. Exploding from this singularity to instantly cover masses of unimaginable space. Time, gravity, space were born. Micro atomic mater like quarks emerged and reacted to become the atomic matter we are more familiar with: neutrons, protons and electrons. These elements in turn reacted in different ways to one another, depending on the chance of an instantaneous moment, to create atoms, some of which are documented in the periodic table.
Atoms themselves reacted with other atoms to become molecules that forged, through stages of random reaction, DNA and cells. eventually larger multi-cell organisms began to emerge. First as symbiotic states between a cell and the bacterium mitochondria, but eventually, and over a time scale that even your nan would run out of things to talk about, evolving to multi-celled organisms instructed by the mystery's of the dead double helix.
Organisms got bigger, and more sophisticated through the random reactions of cells, and the chance evolution of there DNA blueprint. Better designs prevailed, more sophisticated models emerged.
The universe from its very conception, to the continued existance of you and I is built on atomic chance collisions, random evolutions, and chemical reactions that result, overall, in sufficient harmony for us to exist at this time. A harmony of seeming staggering improbability that permits: thought, art, love, hate, and sorrow.
Everything is born through the multiplication of ridiculously large factors of improbability.
We ourselves, if we start from the Roman era are the product of over 1 million trillion forefathers doing the nasty (imagine yourself working your way backwards up a family tree and you will see these numbers are accurate). If anyone of them had decided to go facial or indeed, less graphically, held onto that mental image of Anne Robinson a nanosecond longer, your genetic line would have been altered.
Everything we have ever touched, seen, fantasied, or conceived is a expression of the infinite power of chance.
So, the next person who tells me it's silly to believe in Unicorns is getting punched in the face.
