The idea for this set came from my disdain for having to “put my face on” one day, but knowing I had to. I had to?? Why are we as women culturally bound to be pretty at all times even when we don’t want to be? I was once pulled in the office and scolded at an old job for not showing up in proper “uniform” because I did not have makeup on that day. Even when I was not going to work I used to feel obligated to put on a face when just meeting friends for happy hour at a dive bar. So I set out to visually express the feeling of being bound to things. Even though the things we’re bound in obligation to often result in beauty after the sacrifice, cooking for a loved one when you haven’t even eaten yourself, spending time with your kids instead of doing homework, putting on makeup when you can barely pull yourself out of bed and put on a smile, it is still bondage. I have a begrudgingly beloving relationship to beauty. What has you #bound?
