little bit late, but Happy Lunar New Year
not much going on. sitting at home, having Ramen for lunch. I know it's something that a person is supposedly supposed to grow out of around about the time they leave college, but I still like the stuff. It's hot, it's filling, and I actually like a couple of the varieties. Also it's cheap. And in the winter when you are averaging less than 30 hours of work a week...that's important. It's miserable outside. yesterday was just sort of blah with fog and rain...today was more of the same with a temperature drop to about freezing. I hate winter.
Spent the weekend dealing with some family stuff and also hanging out with my good friends. Watched some Harry Potter and shot some pool at a country bar. Grew a beard. Actually I had just gotten lazy and not shaved for a couple of weeks. It's gone now. Got itchy and bristly....growing out in all manner of directions.
also: John Updike died today. he was never my favorite person, but he could write.
Finally finished Gogol's Dead Souls. I like the book and I really like Russian writing, but sometimes it seems to go on forever. Almost Dickensonian attention to minutiae and detail. And it's usually depressing. If you only knew them from their writing you'd assume that all Russians are deeply depressed people.
Trying to get started on Gibson's newer novel Spook Country, but at the same time I want to get some of this clutter of magazines read and recycled and I'm trying to study my Russian aaaaaand reading up on some technical stuff for the Marines....it's a lot trying to cram into my head at once....I don't know how I'll ever manage when I go back to finish my degree.

We still eat ramen too, although I only use a portion of the seasoning packet to cut down on the sodium. If you throw in a few vegetables, it can actually be quite healthy. Yay for beards!
