nothing really going on. just sitting here on a saturday drinking Cafe Du Monde cofee with chicory and listening to the playlist I made on that snowday last week. currently up Johnny Cash "The Long Black Veil".
this is the first weekend in a while that I don't have something pressing going on. Holidays are done. I don't have to go to drill for a few weeks. Not planning on driving down to San Antonio, thoughI still might. My grandmother really needs a new thermostat for her house. I have the stat already...I just need to go down there and install it for her. maybe tomorrow. Katy woke up briefly and then went back to sleep. I was woken promptly at 6am by Ico. He gets all snuggly and insistent in the hour before his usual (see: WEEKDAY) morning feeding time. I try to explain to him about Saturday and he responds that on Caturday he gets fed at 6 (and if he had his way at 7 and 8 and 9 and 10...) and since everyday is Caturday....I need to get up and get him his kibble. he's now full and happy and napped out in my readin chair with his "mommy pillow", faux fur topped pillow we got him to love on from IKEA. he gets into trances and just does the whole kneading at and kissing on thing with it. it's cute.
now playing: Echo and the Bunnymen "Just a Touch Away"
work is going along allright. It's been a really easy week in term of the jobs we've had. the weather's been cold though, but warming up in the day. today it should be about 70. I wish my rear tire wasn't shot or I'd go out for a much needed ride.
I'm getting really good at this job I have. But it's not the job I want. It's certainly not what I envisioned myself doing at age 30.
getting promoted last week to Sergeant was really cool. (and thank you everyone for the congratulations on that. )
now playing: Coldplay, "Spies"
when I enlisted in the Marine Corps, I thought that if I ever made it to sergeant, I could be happy with that and anything else would just be good. and I'm glad that I've made it to that level. Didn't expect when I joined a year before 9-11, that I'd end up with two deployments, including a combat deployment to Iraq. oh well...so it goes.
I can stop drilling after Feb 13th and drop to the inactive reserve ( that means I'm still on the books and available for active duty service if called up, but I don't have to go to drill every month). I don't think I'm going to do that. I've given my friends and co workers a few reasons for this. The extra $300 or so a month certainly helps. but noone ever joined the Marine Corps to get rich. also, we just found out that a significant portion of our company will be going with another batallion to augment their numbers when they go to Iraq later this year. They are taking all of the guys who haven't been yet. Most of these kids have only a year or two in the Marine Corps and are still pretty green. I just don't think I'd feel right taking off when I think I can help them get ready for what they've got coming.
now playing: Ray Charles and Norah Jones "Here We Go Again"
and really when it comes down to it, as strange as it sounds (even to me) I really do love the Marine Corps. It's what I've been doing off and on for almost 13 years now. originally I figured I'd be a major by now, but the college thing went awry. so now I am a sergeant. and as far as I'm concerned...it's the best rank in the Marine Corps.
current media consumption- finished a couple of books this week. I've been reading through Kagen's
On the Origins of War and the Preservation of Peace. Might move on to his take on the Peloponneisian War next, but I'm thinking maybe instead Greider's One World, Ready or Not. Also working on an autobigraphical account of a motorcycle journey through Africa.
now playing: Tori Amos "Cornflake Girl"
haven't gone to the movies since the other week when Katy and I went and saw Pan's Labyrinth. Amazingly good movie. gruesome and beautiful.
made Katy sit through Real Genius the other night, since she hadn't seen it. she got her revenge last night when she picked our dinner movie, Bambi.
it wasn't so bad. it was actually interesting to watch it. That was the first movie I remember seeing in the theater. I was in preschool when it was released and my aunt took my brother and I to see it. I must have been about 4. and the dvd had a special feature of the transcripts of the meetings with Walt and his team on how they would design the animation for the movie. interesting stuff.
anyway, that's enough ramble for now.
y'all have a good weekend.
