Just got home a little while ago from seeing Casino Royale.
I really very thoroughly enjoyed it. It had a great mix of action and actual plot. The last bit seemed a bit tacked on until it all played out, but then it made a certain amount of sense and even helps to explain some of Bond's character as seen in the later (earlier) films. It was definitely a darker and more violent Bond film...and yet, it was not any less suave. Or maybe it just wasn't any less rich. Aston Martins and guhzillion dollar wardrobes are still very much a part of the film...and a $10 million poker tournament. The fact that it was the more pedastrian "Texas Hold 'Em" type poker rathar than Baccarat dissapointed a bit, but if they are trying to renew and rejuvinate Bond for a new era...they did well. All in all...I was impressed.
The Katy wasn't interested in seeing the film, so she was across the street and went to see Borat. I just don't have it in me to see it at the theater. I know I wouldn't enjoy the experience. I'm not sure what it is in me, but the whole public humiliation and seeing people at their worst for comedic effect, especially sitting in a room full of people easily indentified with those on screen....the very idea makes me squirm. Anyhow...she came back to meet me at my theater since my movie was out well after hers...and we wandered around Barton Mall for a turn. I fought off the urge for megaconsumerism that only strikes me when I am at the mall...and perusing IKEA's online catalouge.
speaking of which...now that they've opened an IKEA in Round Rock...I'm going to have to go. When I first got back from Iraq they had a queen sized platform bed that I wanted...but they wanted to charge me as much as the cost of the bed to ship it...factory direct from Sweden apparantly...and I was left to settle with a full size that I found for sale local. Well...now that they are in town I can go back and get the bed that I actually want...though it means buying a new mattress etc. perhaps after the New Year.
Oh the Trailers before Casino Royale. I always like to get there in time for the trailers. The audience half "ooohed" half mocked the Rocky Balboa trailer. I find myself reconsidering my stance upon hearing the initial report that they were making it....It may be worth the matinee, especially if I can go with my dad to see it.
The Good Shepherd looks good and the poli sci student in me won't let me miss it. That and Angelina is in it. *shrug* it appeals to me higher and my base interests.
Winning the "oooh pretty!" and "eewwww! I have to think when I see this!" response from the crowd was the trailer for Pan's Labyrinth. I am going to see this movie.
and that's my weekend so far. that and here I sit with a large glass of Applejack and OJ (1:1 ratio) and a splash of soda.
