I just got back from Miami on the red-eye last night -- another math conference, this one for 5 days. The talks were incredibly hard, but the weather was warm and occasionally sunny. Miami Beach was downright gorgeous, though the town itself is too damn touristy. Overall thoughts -- Miami is a great place to visit in the winter, but I think it would be a crappy place to live.
Amusing exchange: Thursday morning it was sunny and in the mid-50's when I went to get a shot of espresso (at Starbucks, because there's no other fucking place to go). I walk in wearing a t-shirt, and the woman behind the counter says "Don't you know it's cold out there?"
I'm flying out on another red-eye tomorrow night, this time to the east coast. My old old buddy E convinced me I should come back for Christmas after all, so I made last-minute travel plans. Surprisingly, I was able to find a reasonably priced ticket on JetBlue by arriving in NYC Xmas (look at me, I'm taking the "Christ" out of "Christmas") morning. So I'm quite happy to see the strike is over, and that I'll be able to get to Port Authority no problem to catch a bus up north.
