03:40 am - an observation
Ahhh human nature. A phenomenon that never ceases to send shivers of amazement up my spine at each new observation and realization. Today's thought is revolved around a sensitive subject. Not all of us have experienced it in our lives, and hopefully those who haven't won't anytime in the near future. But those of use who have understand how it puts things in a new eye opening perspective. I'm talking about death. It is never a welcome visitor, often showing up at the worst possible moments in life. Sometimes it creeps up and to our horror bashes us on our skull and runs away like a coward, leaving us in shock not able to even calculate what just occurred. Or sometimes it moves in like a slow moving storm cloud we see but are unable to outrun, and it engulfs us in the heart of a treacherous violent storm that lasts for years. Whatever way it happens, that is exactly what is does is HAPPEN. It is not something that is preventable, it is unpredictable and at the same time definite. All we can do is go about our lives not thinking about it too much. But when it does happen, were suddenly forced with an interrupting change. Change is terrifying to us creatures of habit and routine. So where the human nature part comes in is here. Just as in a flock of geese flying in V formation- when one goose gets hurt or falls out of line, a few other geese drop out of formation and stay with it until it dies or is ready to go back; we humans stop what we are doing to try to do what we can in helping each other get back to life- our veritable formation. What really made me smile, though, was an incident today at work. A woman had come back from a week off for the death of her mother in law, and every employee had signed a card for her in sympathy. The guy who only works on Sunday mornings who happens to detest this woman and has never gotten along with her then stopped in. It completely floored me when the first thing he did when he walked in was went up to her and said "I'm sorry about your loss", with a sincere, somber look. The grand idea that people can set aside their differences -no matter how great- in order to show compassion for each other is overwhelmingly inspiring. It reminded me of when I was in high school, and there was this immature little shit that always used to find some reason to make fun of me in front of his other friends for no good reason other than cuz he thought it made him look cool. Well one day a boy I knew committed suicide, which really fucked with my head. I must have clearly displayed that I was upset, because somehow that bully found out and actually came up to me and said " I'm sorry about your friend". Same situation.
The only thing that saddens me is that it takes something so big and dramatic to convince people to get along. Kind of like when the 9-11 attack occurred and suddenly everyone was united as a country in mourning the loss and scrambling to help. If only we could learn to be more compassionate and empathetic all the time, not just in the extreme instances where we are reminded of our own fragility.
But at least its a step.
Anyways- its been a looooong day. I haven't slept in 2 days so here I go. I've got a scheduled snow date with my daughter in the morning.

I think I may be able to get out of work early and catch the show. I'm gonna keep my fingers crossed on that one. I need to get tickets before they sellout.
