I am reading "As Meat Loves Salt" by Maria McCann. It is about the Bad Angel, the love that wants to possess, that shows itself in rage, that cannot share lest it lose its rightful dominion. It is about the love that is the Devil on your back and in your loins. It is the kind of love that destroys all who partake of it. Ah gods, do I wrongly relish a love like that!
The book is set against the backdrop of the English Revolution, so 17th century, Cromwell, the Roundheads and Ranters and Levellers. Flux and revolution. Idealism and the crushing reality of class warfare and religious politics. And the love story is a fitting metaphor for the time.
What is a fitting love story for our time? Tragic? Twisted? Comic? Romantic? Hopeful? Nostalgic? Cynical? Bitter?

One that takes place against a forbidden backdrop...one that ends unresolved so that the reader will actually have things to think about upon completing the story...
