I just want to say thank you to everyone on this site because you are all so nice and welcoming! And I've decided to brave it and I'm going to apply as a Suicide Girl model. My goal is to help promote a greater acceptance of what is beautiful and artistic, and to show that it goes beyond a surface level.
Plus, if I can help any other girls out there who, like me in middle school (god!) and high school (gross) felt indescribably different from the girls who so effortlessly seemed to just fit in and match this societal ideal, I would help them in a heartbeat.
Well today...I guess I'm going to try to think about my Roman Self-Fashioning essay about Horace <<Great stuff by the way if you've ever read it>> while I sit behind the counter at the Haitian gift shop. Sigh. I wish more people would come in... I mean it when I say the things these artisans make are truly gorgeous and can fit in even a New England home! The jewelry is awesome too. And hey, doesn't it feel great to know all the benefits go to charity? Wow that was another cheap plug on my part.
Now I'm gonna drink my brown rice tea (it sounds gross, but it's what I was raised on...my grandparents used to brew it...it's japanese green tea, brown rice, and popcorn kernels) and head off to translate a dead language.
Lotsa love,
Julia/Mieko
