AAAAARGH!!
Damn, but this philosophy professor is a moron!
Today she presented the two following arguments in class.
Argument 1:
The sentence "All bodies are extended" is analytical.
To say that something is a body includes that it is extended.
There are no bodies that are not extended.
You don't have to know what "extended" means.
Forget any definition you know of "extended".
If you think about it, you will realize that yes, all bodies are extended, even if you don't know what extended means.
That is why this is an analytical statement.
Argument 2:
The sentence "All young men are not old" is not analytical.
To say that there are young men who are old might be true.
It all depends on what you mean by "old".
If you use one definition, it works and if you use another, it doesn't.
Besides, we can't even determine when "young" or "old" are chronologically, so you have no working definition anyway.
Since the meanings of the words can change whether its true or not, it isn't analytical.
Any argument to the contrary of these two statements gets an incredulous look and a lengthy discussion about how hard philosophy is and that some people just aren't cut out for it.
She is so frustratingly stupid.
Why is she teaching this class?

emelaeth:
That really sucks....I have found that philosophy professors are mostly pompous asses who are bitter that they can't live off of their writing and have to teach...so they take out their frustration and make their students feel ignorant to make themselves feel better. Every philosophy professor I have ever had fit into this category.
virtuallylucid:
Yeah. Even worse is that she isn't technically a professor as she only has a bachelor's and is currently working towards her masters. Sometimes her answers to questions are "I'll have to ask about that"
