Day Six
I hung around the inside of the house all day today. I was never able to relax, a stranger in some one elses house that I had just broken into. I was constantly turning down the television thinking I heard a car pulling up and I was always getting up to look out the windows to see if someone was coming. I stayed in my plate carrier all day with my M4 in arms reach and the .45 on my side. I figured if the owners came back I would try and escape to the woodline and if not then tell them I stumbled across their lodge accidentally and the doors were open and I was just looking for a safe place to stay.
The news was in panic as the infection and outbreak seemed to be everywhere. People in uninfected areas were urged to stay indoors and not help those wounded, even if the wounded were your loved ones and friends. Fox News even reported that if attacked by someone with rabies that only way to stop them was to shoot them in the head. Make no attempt to restrain them yourselves the newscaster warned.
I dont know anything about horses so I went to the stables this afternoon and just opened the stalls and let the horses free. There are rivers, creeks and a large lake on the property. They would be better off taking care of themselves. I left the stable doors open in case they want to get back inside. I have no idea if horses do that or not but I guess I will find out.
The house runs off a diesel generator. I have to dig through the drawers and see if I can figure out how to take care of it properly. The owners still havent returned.
Day Eight
The owners of the lodge still havent returned. The news media is getting hysterical. CNN Atlanta shut down their feed and most major metropolitan areas are declaring themselves federal disaster sites lost to the infection. No Evacuation. Containment only. Martial Law has been declared nationally and the military is ordered to put down all infected personnel on site. Evacuation centers all across the country are claiming to be compromised. Refugees are being redirected to new evacuation centers only to find en route that the new center has also been compromised. Numerous of bus loads of civilians from these centers keep breaking out into infection as compromised/wounded civilians are sneaked on board by love ones. Apparently the infection spreads and in a matter of minutes the entire bus has been attacked and killed/infected.
I had to shut the television off. They werent really telling me anything I needed to know to stay alive and I have the gist of the picture. The situation is critical. At the lodge road I went to the first bend before reaching the main road and chainsawed a large tree across the private road. I threw tow straps around the felled log and winched the tree into position effectively cutting off the private road from the highway. I then took the chainsaw and cut a path in the woodline wide enough for the H1 to bypass the obstacle. This path came in and out of the woods several hundred yards from the felled tree to help hide it from observation.
I then drove down the county road towards town. I wanted to see it from a distance so I could get a better idea of what the local situation was like but I hadnt even gone a couple miles before I could see thick black smoke coming from the direction of town. That was as close as I needed to get to find out all I needed to know.
Tomorrow I am going to overwatch the county highway and see what I can find.
