Lights Out! Day Two
Monday morning: wake up at 2.30. Too much angst going on to get back to sleep. Alarms set for 5.00; get up at 4.45.
Getting dressed in the dark. Not sure what colour socks Im putting on. Incredibly, Im not even sure which tap is the hot one without looking I have to run them both to find out, and it takes a couple of goes because, it seems, water doesnt like to be hot before 5 in the morning.
Switch the hall light off as I go downstairs; whoever was the last to come up to bed left it on all night.
As Ive said previously, this isnt so much about electricity being evil although it does kill polar bears, which is quite cuntish. Its simply about readjusting our body clocks to the natural cycle of the sun. Because we depend on electricity for light, we take no notice of whats going on in the sky I just wanna make the Sun God for a while. His rules.
So although Im not crusading against electricity per se, its amazing to notice how many lights there are on in the kitchen. The washing machine. The boiler. The fridge, of course.
I find myself unsure if Im using the toaster correctly Im like, is there more than one knob? Am I using the wrong one? There is enough of a faint sub-light for me to see my crumpets and to make a cup of tea. I think this is coming from street lights in the distance, but when I glance again I can see dark blue is it happening? Is it now? Check compass points YES! Thats the East! I stay standing in the kitchen to eat breakfast its a bit too treacherous to navigate through the house carrying plate and mug.
My housemate has a book I want to read; its on the table in the front room. I can see sufficiently to find the book, because the sky is lightening more quickly on that side of the house. That, and theres a big street light directly outside. I wont be able to read yet though, put my makeup on or do anything else. Ive tried to watch the sunrise before and my concentration span has never been up to it. Now, there is literally nothing else to do. I sit on the step looking over the garden. The birds are so loud I think my heads going to explode. Some make isolated sounds, others make a chatter like the hum of locust wings.
Suddenly, and it really does happen in a second, a cloud must have shifted or the sun hits a particular angle, and the sky lightens the same amount in one second as it had in the previous 5 minutes at least. At the same moment the brass windchimes in the neighbours garden start to sound.

I'm enjoying reading your daylight experiment blogs; sounded like a magical dawn moment. But have to point out that you wearing odd socks isn't an unusual thing.
I'm really enjoying (once I'm actually up) heading out to catch the bus for the early shift at the moment. This city's so fucking beautiful in the spring sunshine.
