Thank you everyone for your advice on my last post. Especially Daveysockrock. I guess I really needed somebody to lay out all the options for me. I've figured that I'm going to borrow a bit more money, drive to my parent's (which is only 3 hours out of the way), then drive on from there the morning of. I can drive back the fast way, but I definitely feel safer knowing I won't be trying to find somewhere to eat for cheap and park and sleep late that night.
I get a 50% discount at a major corporate snack-spot now (since I work at one), so I will map out my trip to stop there for healthy snacks instead of eating fast food, and the prices should be the same.
And, in just the way that life always works itself out, the doctors will induce my sister's labor on the day I'm getting to my hometown, if she hasn't delivered by then. It's going to make things much better to see new life in the midst of all this.

I guess I hadn't explained, the man who died was a dear friend of mine, and his death was quite tragic. I have to go for me, for him, and for his family and our other friends. I just have to go in every way possible.
