Wait, are you not using Keylight? It comes free with AE, but it's a separate install. If you're using the built in junk, you're doomed. Linear Color Key is the best basic keyer and it's crap except for certain special occasions, like homecoming, or a cotillion. ?? Also, are you using a multi-layer key for detail, inner and outer? Very helpful.

Yikes, I have to build a demo for Adobe's NAB presentation of AE 7 tomorrow. A shot I did in AE 6.5, I have to recreate in AE 7... but 7 kinda don't work the same. Erg. What we do is hell.
