Top 10 Horror movie list:
This time of year, to 10 all time horror miovie lists abound everywhere on the Net. Obviously , any list like this is totally subjective. Nevertheless, yours truly is a HUGE classic horror fan and a fan of tomorrow's holiday. So -I finally no longer have an excuse to not share MY all time list..
(Note -this is MY list posted on MY blog. You're welcome to agree or disagree -but don't post telling me-'there's already lists so-and so, yada, yada , yada... NO SHIT I JUST SAID THAT! This is MY list!)
10) Texas Chainsaw Massacre -the original. Honestly, it's a bit dated. BUT it's also if not balls-out scary, disturbing as hell. And based on a true story. Backwoods fuckers killing folks to cannibalize later =creepy.
9) Event Horizon -Probably THE single best contemporary flick I've seen, and one of the best sci-fi horror flicks ever. Combination 'haunted house in isolated outer space' AND satanic freak-out. And Sam 'DAmien Thorn' Neill is fantastic in this.
8) The Howling - The film that set the bar for the modern werewolf movie. Not just one, but a whole colony of them fricking dog-people. Damn.
7) The Omen (the original) - It's got it all. A creepy kid. A big , mean dog. Satan as the baddie. And a slew of gruesome deaths including impalement and decapitation. PLus an Oscar-winning and terrifying soundtrack by Jerry Goldsmith. Oooh....
6)Suspiria -I still vividly remember the original movie poster for this , boasting 'Once you see this, you will never again feel safe in the dark.' OK, maybe that's a bit much. But this highly underrated italian horror film about a dance academy run by a coven of witches-is scary. Nuff said.
5) The Fog (the original) -The first of 3 on this list by the Master, John Carpenter. Though a weather anomaly has been mocked as cliche and not scary, this movie proves otherwise. A ghost story, vengeful leper pirate ghosts, and the impending death carried in the aforementioned fog (propelled by a driving Carpenter score) make this a scare classic.
4) The Thing (Carpenter version) -a gruesome, shape-changing monster, paranoia, the isolaated Arctic waste - just think -if it was a perfect copy, how would YOU know?.....
3) Halloween (the only version that counts -the Carpenter original) -Forget about all the sequels and remakes and ripoffs it spawned. And hell -even forget it revolutionized the 'slasher' flick. Michael Myers is still the all-time unstoppable horror baddie. Carpenter's film score is the ultimate horror soundtrack, with a main theme that's come to sum up the season. And -even if there never was any sequel, remake, anything -the ending will cause you to look over your shoulder....
2) The Exorcist - When you're battling Lucifer himself, there's gonna be some scary moments. The pure shock value in all the gruesome doings (spinning head, voices, and the spider walk brrrrrrr) of the possesed Regan still isn't any less powerful -more than 30 years later and no matter how many times you've seen it.
1).....drum roll, please...... The Shining . Yes, it's certainly convoluted as hell compared to Stephen King's original book version. But Stanley Kubrick outdid himself with this terrifying adaptation of King's bestseller.Even the original TRAILER for the film is a classic. Where to begin?! Jack Nicholson at his best as an eventual raving lunatic. A chilling Wendy carlos soundtrack. Isloation, a not just haunted but possibly possesed hotel, madness, and absolutely bone-chilling imagery ('Come play with us, Danny....') make the 'masterpiece of modern horror' the best of all time -imho.
There is still one more -NON movie -that I will say is the single scariest thing ever put on film -I'll share THAT tomorrow...
