So I actually really enjoyed writing my last blog, however it was a bit on the depressing side so I thought I needed something to bring it up again!
As you can tell I tend to nerd out when I like something; video games (obviously), movies and music. I tend to get a little bit emotionally invested. However, one thing I am extremely passionate about is Australian music. Being an Australian band definitely makes things a bit difficult in "making it big" as the kids say, which is a shame because we got some crazy talent on this desert island. So in saying that I thought I'd do a thing were I'd write a somewhat regular blog hi-lighting one of these said bands.
So here goes nothing, I would like to start with what I consider the Holy Grail of Aussie music.
Hiatus Kaiyote
Melbourne - Australia
These guys are crazy talent musicians with influences from Jazz through to African Soul music. Their leading lady, the groups undeniable life force, Nai Palm leads this group with her twistful use of guitar counter-counter-harmonics and key changes that seem to come out of nowhere, but gosh darn it they just work. Layered on top her powerful R&B inspired vocals. For a four piece band these guys produce such an incredibly full sound, even live.
As for myself being a vocalist, usually, the first thing I pick up on are lyrics. A massive reason why I love Nai Palm's writing is her use of double meaning through her lyrics throughout their albums. For example in "Shaolin Monk MotherFunk" the lyric "I own the hour" was explained by Palm in an recent interview as also meaning I own the our, referring to past relationships.
No song of theirs is like the other, but still seem to effortless slip into the next.
They are unlike any other band I've heard of, with an undeniable pull of loyalty. I'll leave you with one of my favourite film clips of theirs. Peace out❤️
