i was given "the unbearable lightness of being" by a ballet dancer i was sleeping with when i was 16. he said i reminded him of sabina. it is a novel of friendship, sex, and relationships, and provided to me a template of extra-marital affairs, and the complications that come with them. sabina was such a strong character, that i have since tried to pattern my life after hers. so that is the first way in which the book changed my life. secondly, kundera's poetry of being closer to the earth and relationship=being tied down from heaven , moved me. the closer we are to true happiness in relationships, the more pulled down to earth we are.when we are truly free, it is when we are the most alone and "unbearably light"-i can't even write the ways in which this book affected me-it has molded my subconcious for the last ten years
