is the dream of america one of absolute religious freedom for all, or one that keeps religion absolutly out of public life? my american ideal is one in which people are able to wear religious symbols, or no symbols at all, without being subject to censorship or ridicule. my husband and best friend both believe that religious symbols should be banned in public schools, and in civic jobs. which idea is more "american"? which provides more freedom?

I feel passionately about no religion, so religious symbols appear to me like the Nike slogan. The "freedom to" wear them is valuable to me because it costs me nothing. I need no "freedom from" them.
