NaNoWriMo 2005, Day 1
Curse my bodys need for sleep. Id really wanted to get a little more writing in last night but sleepiness hit me rather suddenly. So I didnt quite make my goal of 2275 per weekday. I came to 2275 by dividing the 50,000 words into the number of weekdays in November. I tend to be really busy on the weekends so I figured Id just count anything written on Saturday or Sunday as catching up.
Anyway, 1599 words isnt a bad start for me. Ill just have to work on typing a bit faster. I have a bit of a problem in that I type much slower than I think so while Im typing out a sentence I have a extra time in my head to start questioning whether I can write the sentence better, so I start over with a new sentence, and while Im typing that I cast doubt on that sentence and so on until Ive spent three minutes on one relatively unimportant sentence.
Im still on the first chapter. The struggle with my internal editor has been fierce as I failed to really establish Edgewoods character before thrusting him into the plot. I have to keep reminding myself that I can flesh out the opening chapter more after I meet the 50,000 words. I can flesh out everything more later. This is just a draft. I just need to get the skeleton of the story out and I wont do that if I allow myself to go back and fix stuff. Ive made a rule for myself that Im only allowed to move forward with the story.
Im really looking forward to getting to the second chapter. I should get well into it today. It will be Edgewoods first meeting with Raifalu, which is where the real fun for me as a writer will start. Chapter one has been mostly about setting up the plot. I like my plot and think its a fair one, but the writing I enjoy doing is character driven not plot driven.
Word Count: 1,599 / 50,000
