I have ants in my kitchen! 
I don't feel bad about having to kill them since, well, I don't exactly want them in my food, but the diagram on the back of the ant trap box is just plain mean. It says something like :
Step 1. Ants enter to eat the bait
Step 2. Ants return to the nest to die.
And theres a little picture illustrating each one. So sad.

I had ants in my kitchen shortly after I moved in, several years ago. I just found where they were coming in and blocked it off, and made sure all the food was cleaned up. Never had them since, and I haven't been careful. But don't feel bad for ants, they don't know they're alive and you're only shortening their lifespane by a few weeks anyway.
