Ahh! I have sooo many suggestions for LA/NYC! What kind of things are you most interested in seeing/doing?? For starters...

I recommend The Rough Guide to Los Angeles and The Rough Guide to New York City because they are hipper and less touristy than most city guides. smile

If you are looking for a cheap hotel in NYC, I highly recommend the Sohotel! wink

I would recommend above all things seeing a show at CBGB, if only it still existed. frown Maybe more later in a message. NYC has a really good public transportation system. Get a metro pass and you'll likely never need a cab or have to walk too very far. Don't even think of taking a car into the city though.
