First verse from: What Did You Learn in School Today?
Words and Music by Tom Paxton
"What did you learn in school today, Dear little boy of mine?
What did you learn in school today, Dear little boy of mine?
I learned that Washington never told a lie.
I learned that soldiers seldom die.
I learned that everybody's free.
And that's what the teacher said to me.
That's what I learned in school today.
That's what I learned in school."
This song was always a favorite when I a child, and while I haven't been in school in 7 and a half years , life seems to teach similarly twisted facts, so I thought I'd try to compile some of my own recent education. While I certainly do not claim to understand many, if any, of them, here are some random new lessons that I've learned this week, as well as a few questions I still have not quite found answers to yet:
Every single product, electronic or otherwise, and regardless of brand, that I have ever bought from Best Buy has been defective from the start, or has broken within hours. I wonder if their shipping and/or handling practices are especially hard on the cargo?
There are no Bluetooth devices that allow a person who is deaf in one ear to use a music profile to listen to streaming radio; they are all double headsets that split the music into 2 headphones, so you can only hear half of the music. So much for the Telecommunications Access Act passed nearly 15 years ago.
I was able to find a $3 stereo to mono adapter at Radio Shack, so that all the sound is channeled to the left headphone, but I'm still stuck with a wired headphone.
The best Blackberry accessory I've found is a hard case with a turnable and removable clip, that was sold at a mall kiosk with no association whatsoever with any electronics or cell phone store. All they sold were cases, nearly any kind for nearly any model of cell/smartphone. I can't take a photo of the BB in the case, but I got one of the 2 halves of the case and the removable clip:
I have yet to find a cell phone store worker who knows which electronic accessories are compatible with which smartphones, "All we can say is buy it, take it home, and if it doesn't work, bring it back." Like everyone has unlimited time to waste, unlimited resources, and access to affordable and reliable transportation.
A Blackberry Curve 8330, with the right apps, browsers, and configurations, can access and use most of what I have explored of the SG site, except for the SG Chatroom and the drag 'n drop feature for photo album covers. Using page view is much slower, but in mobile view, a lot of the links don't work right, often opening up the wrong selection, if it works at all. This may help explain why I keep getting new passwords emailed to me every few days, when I have never requested one.
If you are logged into SG through the native BB browser and are still seeing ads, dump your browser cache and reload the page. However, Opera Mini doesn't have a cache. Changing the socket/HTTP setting back and forth seems to fix the problem. It doesn't seem to matter which of the 2 settings it is, whichever one you are in when seeing ads, just switch to the other and reload the page.
The Blackberry native browser claims to be able to emulate Microsoft IE or Netscape, which theoretically should allow SG Chatroom access, but the only thing theses options appear to do is change the sizes of images on the page you are viewing.
Facebook seems to be a great way to find and connect with high school friends you haven't heard from in 20 years. Even the least complete profiles often seem to have the education info inputted.
Having Hopeful* status can be a major obstacle to being taken seriously in groups, and seems to lead to having members and SGs post accusatory responses, and ruin the pre-existing thread with crap that has nothing to do with the group's topic, without even having read the Hopeful's* on-topic post.
On-topic posts, especially even clearly labeled photosets made specifically for the group, posted by Hopefuls*, can indiscriminately be labeled "spam."
The word "spam" has evolved in a connotatively similar way to the words "gay" and "retarded," where their real meanings are not considered by most people, and they are indiscriminately thrown around simply to describe something negatively. Given that "indiscriminate" is part its definition, the current widespread injudicial use of the word "spam" has actually made the use of the word into what it actually claims to define.
Sincerely asking for clarification on conflicting information, plus apologizing for admitted mistakes, plus addressing/correcting false accusations, equals martyrdom.
I gotta get a more up-to-date thesaurus and dictionary.
Written rules of a group may not be consistent with unwritten rules enforced in a group.
(*It is still a mystery to me as to how I even got Hopeful status when I returned to the site last month, after my application was denied 5 years ago, and I hadn't even been on the site in 4 years.)
