Obituary: A moment of silence for an 8 legged friend.
Dudley, MA - Lola Knight, age 21, of 38 Charlton Road, died Saturday March 22nd at her home of natural causes. She was my silent but trustworthy pet and companion her entire life.
Lola, a Mexican Red Kneed Tarantula (brachypelma smithi), was brought home to Quinsigamond Village, in Worcester during the summer of 1983. She was purchased from a pet store in the Worcester Center Galleria, a short time after her predecessor "Hairy" had died. Obviously a spiderling, her age was estimated at a year or a little less when she was made a member of the Knight family. Uncertain of her exact sex at the time, she was named after a song by "The Kinks," which was penned about an encounter with a transvestite
After her 10th birthday, it was apparent by her size and lifespan to that point that she was indeed a female. At her peak, her leg span measured about 5 inches. She lived in the same enclosure for most of her life, and moved with mefour times before landing in her final residence in Dudley.
She leaves behind her caretaker, my daughter Gaia (who referred to the animal as "syder" and loved to fill her water bowl), the family cat Boo, and boa constrictor Clive.
A private service at her home is being planned.
[yeah... so its just a spider. but she was my spider. a pet since i was in the 8th grade. i didn't expect her to go, and i didn't expect it to be as tough. she was cool. rest now my furry friend.]
