so as of lately im getting all these questions from back home reguarding the Jarhead movie that is coming out this weekend.
"should i go see it or pass on this one?"
having read the book that the movie is based on, allow me to speak a little on it.
the accounts are told in first person by anthony swofford about his experiences in the first gulf war and also in the marine corps in general. (which he has so aptly named "the suck" because it sucks to be in it and it sucks the life out of you.)
i can remember the first time i read the book. a boot, straight out of the school of infantry on a C-130 headed for the fleet marine force, finally going to become a real marine. glued to every page, it was like a revelation of the next 3 and a half years that lay ahead of me. it was then that i realized that the possibility that my recruiter had lied to me was greater than i had previously considered. the marine corps wasnt going to be all dress blues and motivated high-and-tight haircuts, as a matter of fact, the games didnt stop at boot camp. it was going to suck. and of course, by then......it was too late. i had already become a part of the machine that is the marine corps. and, crammed like cattle in that cargo plane 12,000 feet over the pacific, i was scared shitless.
i will say this about jarhead. the book does tell it like it is. ive noticed that nowadays, people are interested in military life and what its like being a grunt or whatever. i just hope that hollywood's version of the book doesnt take that gritty reality away from it. its probably not what most people will go into the theatre expecting. anthony swofford went into desert storm as a scout sniper, but never really saw all that much action. so dont go expecting a shock and awe account of tales. look at it more as the other side of the marine corps that they dont show on cnn and DEFINATELY wont show in recruiting commercials. one of the ironies of his story is how it has not so much as an anti-war theme, but leaves more of an anti-military aftertaste. and despite this fact, i guarentee that you will see marine enlistments go up because of jarhead the movie. kids straight out of high school will see this movie and be drawn to the testosterone driven society. they will want to be a part of it. nevermind the warning signs ahead. i know. i was once one myself. i bet that if i had read jarhead before i swore in, it wouldnt have changed my decision one bit. i guess its just something that you have to find out for yourself. i probably would do it all over again.
sounds insane doesnt it?
all in all, based off of the book, i would recommend you go see the movie. at the very least, it'll offer some insight of what its like to be in the suck.
just stay away from the recruiting office after you watch it.
