I wish I knew more about ADHD. I know what the books tell me and I know what reports say...but I wish I knew how it actually felt to have it. My son is having some serious issues staying focused. He had an evaluation done last month to see if he might have ADHD or any other problems. His school psychologist gave him all sorts of test, including personality and IQ tests. His report was very good and extremely detailed and I was happy with it. My son had above average intellegence in all levels except visual processing and timed activiites. He has sensory proccessing dysfunction and now the school thinks that he has ADHD. All of his math and reading skills are above his grade level but he does not accomplish anything at school. When he brings his homework home we do not accomplish much there either.
Currently he is working on editing sentences and has only finished 3 out of the 40 that he owes in 2 hours. I have tried sitting with him and helping him, I have tried being stern, I have triend taking away electronics and nothing works.
CAN ANYONE WITH ADHD TELL ME HOW THIS FEELS FOR HIM AND HOW TO BEST HANDLE THE SITUATION?
I have made an appointement to talk to his peditrician about the posibility of medication b/c I do not want this to catch up with him and for him to fall behind in school.
I have been having a hard time staying positive towards him and not losing my temper and raising my voice. I know it is not his fault but it si so frustrating b/c I dont want him to hurt. I can tell his self esteem is being effected by not being able to stay on task. He is feeling like a failure and other kids at school are being mean to him b/c he is distracting them.
Work is going to rock this week...my boss is out of town, so I wont have him breathing down my back.
I hope all is well with all who read this! Have a great night.

I turned out pretty good though- I graduated academic high, and that was after skipping the majority of my classes. Having ADD doesn't have to be a disability- but people with it don't function like others. I don't think medication is a helpful, society just needs to change the way it thinks people with ADD need to function. ADD people just don't fit into the normal box that society creates.
Maybe if they had your son multitask more it could help. Thats what worked for me. if i had to concentrate on one thing, without music I couldn't concentrate at all.
Now people just know that I'm going to go off in tangents, and my mind will wander- or they'll have to remind me frequently of where i was going- but I've still managed to do Honours university courses, and hold down a senior level managment position.
I consider my ADD a beneficial thing, not a hindrance.
I hope some of this helps. If it didn't- try reading "Delivered from Distraction". Best book on the subject, hands down.
So to make a very long journal comment end- your son will be fine as soon as he realises what he needs to concentrate, and you should be commended for caring so much and being so patient with him.
