Last Thursday, I decided to wander up to Conan's to check out the Thursday night selectahs, have a Kilt-lifter or two, then call it a night. At the very least, I could check in with one of my current crushes.
On my way up 38th, I saw a flyer posted on a phone pole for Friday night's show at the Mount Tabor... and it *wasn't* the Abyssinians!
Having recently gone t-mobile, I whipped out my wireless and rang up the Pub. Yup. It was true. Cancelled. Seems the fellas had overstayed their visas, and were back in D'yerMak'er.
But, thanks and praises, it turned out there was a band anchoring the dance hall at Conan's, Soul Majestic.
When was the last time you heard a reggae band with a three-piece horn section? Can't remember? I can. 1992. Pablo Banton at the Roseland. Nowadays, it's cheaper to have the keyboardist fill in the horns on a synthesizer.
Based in Santa Cruz. One might dismiss them at first sight as posers, or trustafarians. But after five or six Kilt-lifters, I wasn't in an objective frame of mind. I was having much too good a time.
What I can say is, at the very least, they are a tight family of musicians, and are true to the spiritual and rock-steady traditions of roots reggae. Worth a listen.
Selah,
G.
