So I ended up using deviantart's services to make a quick portfolio.
The reactions I've had so far were rather interesting. From "This is great, but it isn't real photography if you're shooting with Sony/Minolta; because real artists use Canon or Nikon..." to a few models expressing enthusiasm in doing some non-traditional work outdoors in the midst of the city, to a co-worker suggesting that I should "clean the pictures up" and be more realistic- because that's where the money is.
Having money as a primary motivator ends up making a person mould his or her work to fit the expectations of other people, taking away in my estimation from the artistic potential. Without a doubt there are some photographers whose stuff naturally has, as Gang Starr said back in '94- that mass appeal. Quite a few of the artists on here have that ability to "wow" with every set. I haven't worked with models in the past, and always wondered how it would be to have two people's sets of ideas combine to make a single product, so this should prove to be interesting to say the least.
We'll see.
