Okay...so yea, the last post was boring as fuck and I don't blame you for not commenting. The past two weeks have been pretty intense from a professional standpoint. Managed to tackle some serious topics and tell stories of characters who may not have had an opportunity to do so otherwise.
It started with a story about a wrestler who was scheduled to take part in a a state wrestling playoff on a recent Monday. Unfortunately, he was arrested on a Friday night for his alleged role in an armed robbery over drugs at an apartment near a local university. Needless to say, he missed his match.
That was followed up with news that two former county residents who had moved to Camden to be closer to their methadone clinic were involved in a lovers spat. She was going to leave him. He didn't want to hear it and he strangled her - then made it look as though she committed suicide by wrapping a belt around her neck and placed her body underneath a tree. She was covered in 20 inches of snow and it wasn't until a tipster, most likely another streetwalker and user, told detectives she had seen the guy with his hands around her throat that the suicide was flipped to a homicide.
"I couldn't take it anymore, she was going to leave me," he told authorities.
Last Monday it was covering Obama's visit to Pennsylvania to talk about health care. It was a circus and it was awesome. Talked about that already, blog backwards and you'll find it. Here's a picture I took while there:
Obama pic!
On Wednesday an 18-year old local girl was arrested as one of ten individuals responsible for the beating, shooting, stabbing, strangling death of a man and his girlfriend. Rumor has it, it's all gang related. Nevertheless, the two were tortured over the course of several hours, then buried in a shallow grave behind a rowhome which was covered with snow.
The girl was last in the paper two years ago as member of a high school field hockey team. Here's the quote I pulled from that first story.
In her younger years, Pierre saw herself as a team player when she was a member of Deptford's field hockey team. She was quoted in a 2008 Times story saying, "We worked together more and it made us hungrier, it made us want it more."
Now, another team effort leaves two dead and nine others facing life in prison.
Most recently, my Sunday story featured the story of a local fire station which burned up in 2008. Its president, which was also its treasurer, is now being investigated by the FBI on suspicion of stealing more than half a million in insurance money.
I'd link to the stories, but they're long and boring.
And I think to myself, what a wonderful world.
