Bring back the draft!!
Before anyone freaks out...I don't mean the military draft. I'm talking about an entirely different type of draft. I think people spend far too much time living in the same place....near where they were born...and never venturing too far away from there. If it makes you happy, then its totally fine. BUT....the problem with this is that you start to think like everyone else in your general area and haven't got a clue what exists beyond your protective walls.
So here is my plan.....
Just like in the draft, when you finally decide to leave school your name is dropped into a big bowl and then they pick you out one-at-a-time to go work some lame-ass job in....and this is the good part....virtually ANYWHERE. Pumping gas in Belguim....Pulling a rickshaw in China....Planting rice in Vietnam...doing foot massages in Amsterdam. The job isn't the important thing. The important thing is that you are snatched away from your friends, your parents, your boyfriend/girlfriend and have to figure out how to live in some foreign land for 6 months or a year.
If after this little intermission in your life you wish to return to middle-of-nowhere, Iowa and live a simple life, then at least you will know that there are other people in the world and have a little better idea of what is bouncing around in their heads.
