I first joined SG in Febuary. I had stumbled across some SG photos on iMesh, and they intrigued me, so I decided to give the site a shot and joined. What I found was not only a bevy of unique and fabulous women, but an apparent 'community' mentality, complete with message boards, groups, profiles, etc. I thought I'd found a great place to make some new friends, and maybe exchange some ideas among open-minded folks.
Boy, was I deluded.
The SG Community turned out to be just like any other self-styled cultural subgroup - cliquey, closed-minded, and completely judgemental. I realize that the above description does not fit every single member, and it's a shame I didn't meet more of the folks for whom it didn't.
Instead, I soon found that it doesn't pay to be 'different' around here, even among people who fancy themselves to be different. I've been ridiculed for my tastes in music. I've been ignored for not conforming to enough of the cultural stereotypes. And god forbid you criticize ANYTHING about the site.
As for the site...I recently made a statement to the effect that those within the SG community love to refer to the site as 'porn' when it suits their need to appear naughty and rebellious, but if someone brings up the word 'hardcore,' everything's suddenly 'tasteful erotica.' I of course caught shit from the mighty Olivia for this, and of course everyone rushed to kiss her ass when she she disagreed with me. However, I stand by the statement, as the the above-mentioned mentality strikes me as highly phony and somewhat deluded.
I hate to be the resident killjoy here, but the SG's are not here to change the world and make a brilliant statement. They're posing naked for money, with the intended effect being titillation. And there's absolutely nothing wrong with that. But be it porno or cheesecake, artistic or not, they're posing naked for money...whether their pubic area is showing or not. So get off the imaginary high horse.
In the end, what it amounts to is that SG is just another cultural entity that only truly welcomes those that conform to certain stereotypes. Which is fine. I guess I just got my hopes up that open-mindedness was more pervasive than it actually was. Am I whiny? Probably. But I'm no more whiny than the pervading attitude is phony.
Bottom line...it's pretty absurd that I ended up feeling like such an outcast in a self-styled 'alternative' environment. I only subscribed for the beautiful women at first, and the women are still lovely, but I'm put off by the phony pretenses around here...so I'm cancelling my membership. With any luck, Olivia won't delete this thread before some of you have seen it, and perhaps I'll have given some of you something to think about. More likely, it'll be, "Good riddance to a whiney shit-stirrer." Which is fine.

you remind me of my friend at work. he's overly crittical about everything he sees too. you guys would get along great. but canceling your membership just cause you dont "fit the profile" (so to speak) seems like a cop-out reason to me. when the groups were first created i though the site would get extreamly divided. but i simply stopped worrying about that and enjoyed the site for what it was. and to keep tabs on my friends i made here.
