And thus a tradition was established. It was this very tradition which has come to enslave us- curbing our freedom of thought and will. How many of you would rather choose to dance naked on mountaintops to adorning yourselves in makeup and costly jewels and fabrics. What is poverty but the absence of material worth? Are not the impoverished perhaps rich in awareness and spiritual insight? By having nothing we may come to understand how much is readily provided for free. The water of the land now carries a price tag. What was once a birthright to (wo)man has been corrupted by inept governance, quickly reformulated back to its natural state, and then packaged and sold, as if the precious liquid were exclusively formulated and manufactured by benevolent companies seeking only to improve our health.
Cats paws gliding across the floor feel little weight of the deft and well-balanced animal. With purpose undiscovered, talents not yet realized, the cat moves from the dining room to the kitchen. Eyes focus on her human, wretched source of everything, begrudgingly accepting and necessary, despite all of the cats inborn skills. And the life, so magical and efficient, once sharp and certain, becomes dull. And in this way, generation after generation, the proud and noble creature is reduced to stalking butterflies, scuttling bugs, or merely shadowy illusions cast upon the wall. Good for a purr, and dependent meow. Dont scratch the furniture, and thank god for hairball-resistant carpets.
We have become our own pets. When not at work who is truly your boss? What person or thing have you allowed to inhibit your actions for the price of not having to decide? Do you own a TV, or does it own you? What we have created for sake of tradition, to honor our ancestors, was, in fact, probably never a good idea. Can you think of modern-day traditions? Thanksgiving? Does it include the Thanksgiving Day game? Christmas? How much did you spend, and are you really so free of debt, so committed to other charities, that the money was well spent? Were you ecstatic when you received that new sweater? Has your life become so much fuller now with the new?
