I woke up early this morning. It was still dark outside and I knew I wasnt going to get back to sleep so I got in my car and went for a drive. Its something I like to do once in a while, just go for a drive to nowhere and back again,no destination or reason, just contributing to ozone depletion(Im not really a save the earth type).
After about an hour of driving around it had become light but people and life in general were still at a bare minimum, which is a really wierd thing especially in the centre London which is where I found myself.I was right in the centre of London, just come through the City part and was heading toward the West End.It always reminds me of a disaster film at that time of day.A disaster film where people and life as we know it has disapeared.Everyone has been evacuated from the city and Im the only one left.Or like in 28 Days Later where everyone is dead or has been killed or eaten. The benefit of driving through town at this time rather than walking is you have the car stereo bangin away,it creates a soundtrack for this little movie thats playing out in your head.Todays soundtrack started with an Unkle cd because I needed something a bit trippy and mysterious then as people and life started surfacing I switched to a Metalica cd,I never remember album titles all I know is its the cd with "The Memory Remains"on it?.
So I carried on driving, went over the river back into South London and stopped off at a bagel shop and picked some up for breakfast when I got back home.
My drive was a success,I had been to nowhere in particular and now it was time to go back home.People were appearing more frequently now and I was in no mood to get into a dodgy position where I might have to engage in conversation so to the safety of my home I went.
10 mins from my house and I looked in my rear view mirror and I saw a Police car behind me,and you know whats coming next.Blue lights flashed so I pulled over and waited for the show to begin.I know for a fact that my car is 100% fine and that although my record isnt totally clean I havent put a foot wrong for years now and I ve got nothing to worry about but it doesnt stop me being a bit on edge.
The copper who came to talk to me(the other stayed in the car)was obviously the good cop in this team,he was a nice bloke. He went through the usual crap"is this your car sir"and"are you aware of the speed limit in this area blah blah blah".So after going through the routine he asked "so why are you out so early on a sunday".
"Mmmmmmm well this is the story officer".
I gave him an edited version of the story Ive just written about above. He just looked at me like I was some kind of idiot, didnt say anything for about 30 seconds, then told me to "keep the speed down if I actually wanted to get to my destination",and walked off.I dont think he believed me or my story, why would anyone get up that early and drive around for three hours and not actually go anywhere, you would have to be some kind of fucking idiot.Well thats what his face said in that 30 second pause.
Im back home now(duh!)and its only 10 am,I feel like Ive spent a whole day up already,I really need to find something to do or this day is going to go on for ever.
To those I spoke to last night.Thankyou
