The twists just keep getting more interesting. Our fundraiser was a critical success. And while we didn't make as much as we'd hoped, we did get a lot of debts paid off. Doing the books with the other core members on Monday, things looked positive. We had a few rentals booked as well as one more of our own events lined up. If all went according to plan, the rent and utilities and expenses involved in the ship would balance out. Keep working hard, and everything would be okay.
And then yesterday we got a bit of bad news. One of the organizations renting the space had been a bit too over-zealous in promoting their event. It had been talked up on the radio, and listed as the go-to event in Los Angeles on that night. Unfortunately, the attention was a little too high profile, and the nature of the advert was such that gave the powers that be some concern. We got word that if we were to go ahead as planned, that police and city officials would be there.
So for the time being, the use of Space Island as an underground venue are on hold. This puts us in a tight spot. Not just the expenses of the new ship, but the camp expenses, and the utilities and the rent.
We've been working towards evolving the space into something else. Phase two of the location would be primarily a location for film & photo shoots. We hadn't intended to make that the main focus until later in the fall, but given the circumstances we're exploring those opportunities now.
If you're involved in any kind of location shooting, or you know people who are, we appreciate your passing this along or letting me know. As a location, Space Island offers:
3,100 sq. ft. indoor space
4,000 sq. ft. outdoor space
Bathroom/shower facilities
Full kitchen
Indooor/Outdoor bar
Wireless internet access throughout the facility
In-house workshop (nearly any prop or set piece can be designed/created on-site)
Easy equipment loading through front or back
Easy access to the 5, 10, and 101
That's a picture of a work called The Phoenix by Darrah Danielle. This image barely does the piece any justice, but it's beautiful nonetheless.
It was the centerpiece of an event we staged on July 23rd called The Phoenix Returns. It was a gallery show. It was incredible music. It was live theater. It was fire performance. It was dance. It was a costume party. It was live musicians. It was acrobatics. It was art. Photographer Rich Kim was on hand, and here are his pictures from the event.
