I'm overdue for an update.
Just as they can be hard to write when nothing's going on, they can be hard to write when everything's going on.
I read last week's news about some random fuckhead killing six people and then himself at an after-hours in Seattle last weekend with mild interest. My art collective puts together underground events, and we invite people to our space for the occasional after-party. So I followed it with more than mild curiosity. Then in talking with d23 on Saturday, I realized that not only were friends of friends involved, but as I looked more closely (and more info surfaced), I'd met one of the victims. He was on our ship for a bit at last year's Burning Man.
Part of me wanted to just go "holy fuck, someone I know was just murdered" but that's happened to me before, and I've learned how to cope with that. What really started to irritate me was the way it's been painted in the media. They keep harping on it being a part of the rave community and the connection to electronic music/DJ culture.
First off, I hate raves. Haven't been to one since 1996 maybe... I'm involved in the electronic music, DJ, and underground scenes as an evolution of that. Went to those parties way back when, learned a few things, and went way beyond it. Secondly, and FAR more importantly, is the tragedy in Seattle had NOTHING TO DO with raves, parties, burners, kids, or any of that. The shooter wasn't a part of that at all. He was a loner. A hunting enthusiast. A pizza delivery guy. An owner of far more firearms and ammunition than a citizen of any country needs under the banner of "right to bear arms." Seems to me there are all kinds of valid questions. Are we safe if our pizza guys are armed to the fucking teeth? Do citizens need pistol grip shotguns? At what point do firearms and ammunition purchases become troubling? I mean, for fuck's sakes - this guy walked into that house with 300+ rounds of ammunition, and yet he left a Bushmaster rifle, many clips, and a fucking machete behind! And he spray-painted "NOW" three times on the way back from his truck to the house. WTF? Was that just the ramblings of a pizza boy who'd snapped, or is it connected to something else?
And victim-wise, the 14 and 15 year old victims bother me. Especially the 15 year old, whose mother was so eager to be quoted in news stories. What the mother-fuck are you doing allowing your 14 and 15 year old kids go to parties that don't end until that late? The kids wound up at the after-hours because they'd missed the last bus, but for fuck's sakes, as decadent as I am, that just seems to be way too late to let your 14 year old kid stay out partying.
Beyond that? Yeah, the world's a fucked place. Bird flu's catching on, though. It's mutated, now there are at least two deadly strains. 29 countries have reported it in the last 7 weeks. And a little over a quarter of all the deaths from it have all been reported in 2006. It's going to be an interesting one, I'm determined to come up with a drinking game to go along with it.
Family drama? Fuck yeah! I've been helping my mom get her house in Arizona ready to put on the market, but it seems like the handiwork she wants me to do is a never-ending list. Cleaning, patching, painting, blah blah blah. I had promised to do whatever was needed before I left, and whatever has been an ever-growing list. Part of me wants to cry foul, but between recent health problems and severe drama bullshit she's been going through, I can't do it. Tomorrow I'll hopefully finish all the painting, though, so an escape from Arizona is imminent. I'm half tempted to try and go on walkabout when all this is through, for serious (feel free to talk me out of it, or into it... I'm open to suggestion).
Creatively, I've been working out a few different ideas for mix sets. I think a NIN set is in the works, many thanks to those who've complimented the Depeche Mode mix or the Phoenix mix, or any of the others I've linked recently. In a non-musical sense, I'm bouncing around a couple more story ideas, I just need the time and the drive to get some things done on both...Dear Motivation and/or Drive, come give me a serious kick in the ass you lousy good-for-nothing bastard, I fucking hate you... Love, Your Pal Trilo Sometimes it's good to take a letter.
Alright, I'm done with the rambling for now. How've you been?
