I had flames shooting out of my oven yesterday.
Yes, my first Turkey day without the family with help from Wil now has one of those stories that will be told for years to come.
Everything was going too perfectly and as we are removing this succulent bird from the oven we realized why you never use a aluminum roasting pan.
The damn thing buckeled and drippings poured into the oven, promptly creating an enormous amount of smoke and causing flames to shoot out of my oven. The flames only lasted for a couple seconds but the house is now rapidly filling with smoke.
We open the windows and the doors to help clear it out but that causes the fire alarm for the ENTIRE apartment building to go off which is ear piercingly loud. Thankfully our building was mostly empty with the holiday so it didn't disturb too many people but we couldn't figure out how to disable the damn thing.
Finally after about a half hour the alarm stops its braying, (though our ears are ringing at this point) and our stuffing, casserole and rolls are still yet to be cooked and we cannot turn on our oven until it is cleaned.
Thankfully our neighbor allowed us to use his oven as we were going to feed him as long as we promised not to catch his oven on fire.
We figured we would have a late dinner anyways but finally at 10:30 we were able to sit down and enjoy what turned out to be a very tasty dinner.
My family is never going to let me live this one down.
