How's this for a country music song title?
"Put the Devil on my back porch and I'll see my friends in Hell"
In arranging a long Easter weekend, I asked my boss for Good Friday off. He said no problem and put it on the calendar. I told him it was not due to my deep religious convitctions. As a matter of fact, when I am in any kind of church, cathedral, or other religious establishment, I swear there's a little black cloud following me. The above "title" came out of our discussion.
Religion is so weird. From my understanding, most of the major ones have the same basic ideals. You have a life to live, you're supposed to be good to your god(s), other people and yourself, and you're supposed to keep away from things that would detract you from these missions.
But in a number of minds, including some prevalent ones, if you see it differently, this is a major attack and grounds for a huge fight.
Why the fuck do people have to be so self-centered, self-righteous, and self-fulfilling with this? It seems as though anything can be justified if done under the guise of religion. It's good to stand up for one's beleifs. But when people turn around and bash it over a bystander's head, it really makes me wonder.
I'm not anti-religious. It's just that there are too many people who bastardize the concepts and never really think about what they're doing.
I have a bumper sticker that says it all: "God save us from your followers".
I don't know what to think any more. I was good friends with a Pagan in college, and we've sort of lost touch, though she does pop up every now and then. A number of her views made sense, as did a great many of her comments. But for some reason, I couldn't really get "into" the Pagan thing. I've also had a number of friends of different faiths, and there was plenty that made sense from them.
I like how Rush says it in Freewill:
"You can choose a ready guide in some celestial voice.
If you choose not to decide, you still have made a choice.
You can choose from phantom fears and kindness that can kill;
I will choose a path that's clear
I will choose freewill"
I think that's the best option for now.
