Only blocks away from where a man was stabbed to death last week, a man was shot dead and a woman was wounded Wednesday night at a San Jose home during a brawl involving as many as 20 people.
Their names were not released.
About 7:20 p.m., San Jose police received reports of a large group of people fighting, possibly with machetes, in the 1000 block of Sultana Drive near McLaughlin Avenue.
Earlier in the evening, several adults and juveniles were in front of the house when a group approached them and a fight began, San Jose police Sgt. Nick Muyo said.
As many as seven shots were fired, striking the two victims, who were in front of the house. The woman, 37, who lived at the house, was taken to a hospital, where she was undergoing surgery Wednesday night. The man, 26, died at the scene.
Several of the people involved, both men and women, were seen fleeing on foot on Sultana Drive. Other witnesses also reported seeing a car leaving the scene.
Muyo said authorities were not sure of the motive but did not rule out that it may have been gang related.
Police were searching for several people on foot in the area late Wednesday and had cordoned off the entire block of Sultana Drive between McLaughlin Avenue and Clemence Avenue.
In recent weeks, the area has seen its share of violence.
On March 6, Ernesto Jaimes, 20, was fatally shot on the 1400 block of Clemence Avenue. A juvenile was arrested in connection with the shooting.
On March 30, Gonzalo Fernandez, 23, was stabbed to death at the corner of McLaughlin Avenue and Story Road in a gang-related fight over red and blue clothing.
Police believe five of the eight previous slayings this year have been gang related. Wednesday's killing was the ninth.
