I had a very nice 4 day & 3 night backpacking trip in Washington state in the Mt. Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest. I also had a nice trip throughout Washington & Oregon, and I ate at some nice restaurants along the way.
Upon returning to Portland, I ate at 3 Doors Down Cafe, which is a very nice Italian restaurant. It had a very nice wine list, that focused more upon Italian wines but had a very nice selection of international and domestic wines. The mixed drink menu seemed smaller than other Portland restaurants. We ended up getting very reasonable priced and very good French Sancerre Rouge.
I started off with the chicken liver pate, which very dense, rich, and vibrantly red. Another diner got the stuffed peppers with albacore, while the other got the potato gnocchi.
Pleasantly surprising, a soup or salad is offered with the chosen entree. The soup that evening was a pureed corn soup drizzled with chili pepper oil and toasted squash seeds. The soup was nice but lacked richness, so it may not have been made with a corn cob stock, which brings out a corny sweetness.
My entree was the pan roasted chicken breast, which was moist, but the skin could have been crisper. The polenta, served as the starch, was bland, so it could have been more highly seasoned. Sauteed anaheim peppers were served with the chicken, but the peppers did not add anything to the dish. So, the chicken would have been better presented with the roasted fennel, polenta, and pan sauce. The other diners both had the salmon, which they said was done very nicely.
I got the malted pot de creme for dessert, which had a very nice consistency and a wonderful malty flavor. Only one other diner got dessert, which was the chocolate truffle assortment. Overall, I would highly recommend 3 Doors Down Cafe.
