For those with a sweet tooth, I thought I would note some bakeries & chocolatiers in the Chicago area, in no particular order.
Bleeding Heart Bakery is very neat bakery with vegan/vegetarian items as well. The baked goods tend to an ecletic approach that ends up with pleasant flavors & textures, which are handled well with the variety of single tarts. Traditional items are done equally well, but the croissants are too crispy for me. The shortbread is exceptional with a rich flavor, and I would definitely recommend the S'mores or Espresso Brownies.
Coco Rouge is a wonderful chocolate shop which has expanding its boundaries with some delectable ice creams and pastries. It began as a specialty chocolate truffle and beverage shop which embraces the ecletic approach as a chocolatier. The truffle flavors can begin with a very suttle flavor and then explode with a benevolent intensity. The drinks as described by a friend are, ". . . liquid orgasm."
Alliance Bakery is a more traditional establishment where one can get good consistent quality with a cup of coffee in the morning and then sit outside with the paper. I have not had there cakes, which does seem to be a specialty of theirs.
La Dolce Via is a special recommendation for those in St. Louis and/or going through St. Louis. It specializes with the Italian spectrum of baking and maintains a very traditional approach with very intense and succulent flavors. Crispy cookies and dense fudgie brownies are equally good for the less adventorous.
