That's right, even after the European Holocaust, there were less Jews in Arab lands than in Europe and America. Now, you could say this was because Islam demands that all non-Muslims be treated as inferiors, prevents them from holding jobs, working for the State, or, as was the case in the Ottoman Empire, including the territory of Judea, even riding on camels or horses lest a single Jew have height over a Muslim, but that would be far far too honest.
One of the reasons a lot of western Jews aren't particularly fond of Likud is that they see it as violating the political dispositions they have become accustomed to over the decades - many European/Western Jews tend to lean more to the left. The Labour party is no different in Israel, primarily consisting of Ashkenazi politicians. This was the group that was in power until Likud took over with the election of Menachem Begin in the 1970's. Since that time, Likud has been the power in charge of Israel. Likud is far more ethnically integrated than Labour - as it was formed out of a coalition of Ashkenazi, Shepardi and Mizrahi (Arab-sourced) Jews. Far from being some "European imperialist" party - Likud is highly integrated while the more European and leftist Labour party consists of mostly European Jews.
Whenever you hear that someone complaining that the UN keeps censuring Israel, remember that over half of it is that the left wing politics of the UN haven't held the reigns of Israel for decades:
