talked to my dad today... isn't it funny sometimes how a voice on the other end of the line that you don't have to doubt even for a second that they love you tears right through the artifice that you carefully construct for other people? my dad has grown up so much in the last ten years, he's someone i admire so much simply for the fact that he's made so many bad choices, and wrong turns and yet he's such an amazing individual that he draws friends to him like a moths to flame. my dad is one of my best chums.
i went driving out di portola road today with amy and we listened to the new sarah harmer album and smelled the orange blossoms. i love when you are making a memory in your mind and are aware of it while it's happening. amy is a safe place for me, even her presence next to me is enough to back down all the din of voices in my head (not good enough, not thin enough, he doesn't love you anymore...) and just let me breathe in and out and look over at someone who always just smiles back. amy is one of my best chums too.
and if Rotten Sockets would lace up her nikes and hit the pavement with me, and let me peer inside her mind a bit more, i could say with all certainty she'd be one of my best chums in no time.
got to make the bed and brush the teeth now. what is usually your routine before bed? mine is books books and more books. it helps my mind settle down and relax. sweet dreams

Long story... My best friend, and ex, K found a compilation cd called Volume when she was in college in Fairbanks. Getting indie and brit music wasn't easy up there, so she bought it. Then she discovered that they released a new one a couple times a year and not only was the cd usually filled with lesser known artists, but many of the songs were alternative mixes, demos, etc, and there was a thick booklet with interviews from every participating band. It was actually very cool. Anyway, she had eight of them when we met and I found her eight more while we were together. They became quarterly releases in 1993 and became two cd sets starting with number fourteen in 1995. I was not a fan of most of the groups and some of the songs absolutely suck, but now that I have more appreciation for rare tracks, I burned my own copies and have relistened to all of the cds. So this compilation is my favorites of the Volume compilations. Unfortunately, they seem to have mysteriously gone out of business after number seventeen.
(From one of the threads on the boards) I grew up listening to my 45 and LP collection - doo-wap, Stones, Guess Who, CCR. The first albums I received as gifts were Elton John's Greatest Hits and ELO - A New World Record because my cool uncle liked them (he's now only my sometimes-funny, somewhat loser uncle). The first band I liked without any family influence was Cheap Trick. Then came Zeppelin and other classic rock types. Then came college voice lessons and choir and I found I liked groups like Tears for Fears and Depeche Mode. During that time I accidentally discovered community sponsored radio and college radio and found Husker Du, the Replacements, Soul Asylum, Soundgarden, Spot 1019, etc., as well as Kate Bush and Cocteau Twins. In my 20's I listened to a lot of adult contemporary. I have eclectic tastes.
